Howdy, Hoosiers. The time has come again for yet another Hump Day Update, where I tell you what I’ve been up to, keep you up-to-date on the campaign, and give you a glimpse of what’s planned for the immediate future.
Last week, we had the required public hearing for turning Montezuma Elementary School into a charter school, and I think it went pretty well. Most of the public comments were in support of the school. The only ones that were not were from the Superintendent that mismanaged the school in the first place, the Superintendent of the neighboring school corporation, and one other person speaking on behalf of an administrator IIRC. The three of them combined only raised questions though and didn’t provide any hard evidence that turning the school into a charter would be a bad idea. Questions, mind you, that they would have already known the answers had bothered to go to any of the meetings leading up to the public hearing.
The signature drive is going well. I was able to get out and do some door-to-door canvassing this last weekend. I love the door-to-door thing because it gives me the opportunity to meet with people one-on-one and often have more meaningful interactions than I would at an event. I know not everybody’s a fan of strangers coming up to their door, though, so I always respect ‘no soliciting’ and ‘no trespassing’ signs if I see them.
I’ve also reached the last article of the Anti-Corruption Act in my first round of revisions, which covers general enforcement. I was able to make the necessary changes to the article to give it more substance, and I will be putting a video out later today. I know that there is still refinement that needs done to the overall framework, but I will start work on that tomorrow.
Today, I’m going to get the enforcement video out, and then do some more canvassing as people get off work this afternoon. I’ve figured out that if I can average about 100 signatures a week for the next month, I will be right where I need to be by June. And that is a very achievable goal.
A quick look ahead: As mentioned, I will be working to refine the Anti-Corruption Act to be more cohesive, strengthen enforcement, and eliminate any loopholes or contradictions that might exist, I have a lunch meeting with a fellow candidate whose district overlaps with my own on Thursday, I’m going camping with the kids and their cub scout troops over the weekend, and of course signatures, signatures, SIGNATURES.
