Today marks 250 years since the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence in 1776, a document that expressed a bold idea for its time: That people have inherent rights, and that governments exist to serve and protect those rights.
Though we all enjoy our firework shows and cookouts this time of year, the holiday has always been about more than that. Early celebrations in the late 1700s were community gatherings where neighbors read the Declaration out loud, shared meals, and reflected on the responsibilities that come with freedom. Over time, Independence Day became a tradition centered on unity. A reminder that despite our differences, we share a commitment to building a society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Those lessons still matter today. Even as our country experiences moments of division, the spirit behind Independence Day reminds us that we’ve always been at our best when we find common ground and work together. The founders emphasized civic responsibility, community involvement, and the belief that progress requires Americans supporting one another. As we celebrate, I hope we can take a moment to reflect on that spirit of cooperation, respect, and shared purpose.
I wish each and every one of you and your families a safe and joyful Fourth of July filled with connection, remembrance, and appreciation for the constructive values that gave the United States that unique spark that lit the fuse for generations of people to keep striving toward a more free, fair, and united society.
